Use of Text Boxes

Excel is considered to be very rigid when it comes to formatting options. The gridlines restrict your formatting options as well as creativity.

At this moment, it makes sense to use a Text Box which floats on the sheet rather than being a part of it.

A Text Box is a rectangular object (you can create them in any shape that you want from Insert Menu -> Choose the ‘Shapes’ option from ‘Illustrations’ panel).

Following are the advantages of using a Text Box:

  • They can be placed at any spot on the Excel sheet as required. There is no restriction on it (hence, having the advantage over rigid Excel cells).
  • They can be formatted to keep them in line with your current theme of the sheet.
  • There are extra formatting options like Shape Effects, Shape Outline etc. (You can find them by selecting the Text Box and clicking on the Format menu).
  • They can be resized to match the content in it and the context they are being used for.

Happy Text Boxing!
